I was given a collection of coins, have no clue on anything about coins. All coins are U.S. Handful of $1, nickels that range form 1938-61, and pannys that range from 1909-82. Here are a couple pics! Is there something here worth getting excited about or just another sentimental gift that i will pass down someday!

    [IMG] to CoinTalk.

US coinage is not my cup of tea, so take what I say with a grain (or two) of salt, and wait to hear what some of our experts have to say.

IMHO your Morgan dollars from the New Orleans Mint aren't worth a whole lot more than their bullion value of about $6.35. The 1890 would probably grade Fine and the 1896 is a damaged Very Fine, at best. From the nature of the rim damage, I suspect that at some time it was part of a bolo tie, or a similar jewelry application.

The Peace Dollar is in much better condition and without seeing it in hand I would estimate its grade at About Uncirculated - possibly Uncirculated if it is substantially more lusterous than the photo shows. 1921 was the first year of issue for that design, and carries a premium over most other years, so you may have a $100 or better coin there. :)

Hey ROy, that 1921 looks like another Morgan to me, not a Peace Dollar. That makes it the most common Morgan made and worth about $10 in that condition. Am I missing something? Were the pictures changed?

IndianaNewbie, if the cents and nickels are in about the same overall condition, you have a fairly nice starter set in my opinion. Nothing to make you rich, but something worthy of preservation. I'd be inclined to keep it, study the coins, and pass them on to generate interest among the next generation. Sometimes coins that are of little interest to long time collectors are far more valuable as keepsakes or for the way they encourage people to take up the hobby more seriously, or at least add to the family collection.

The 1921 dollar is a good representation of one of the most beautiful coins ever minted in the USA even if it's numismatic worth is only 10 times face value. Show it to a few people and at least one of them will probably ask where they can buy them.

    Hi,

The Dollars are common and in that condition worth about $7.00 each.
If the cents start in 1909, see if by the slightest chance you have a 1909 Lincoln with a small S under the date. If you do, turn it over and look at the bottom of the reverse right near the rim for some small initials V.D.B.

Keep your fingers crossed that as that would be a pretty valuable coin.

You may have a 1909 without the S but still having the V.D.B. That has some value too but nothing approaching the value of the firast one I mentioned.

If you have a 1908 or 1909 indian cent, some turn them over and look for a small S at the bottom. Those two can be worth something as well.

By the way, The S is a mintmark indicating the coin's being made in theSan Francisco Mint.

    Have Fun,
    Bill

thats not so bad of a coin judging by the condition of your $1.00's it's probebly worth $4.00-$6.00. That coin also has a lot of history.

Welcome to cointalk and keep up collecting

Is that 96-O dollar a micro O? The mintmark looks unusually small to me.

    Hi,
As already mentioned, the 1909 V.D.B. is a fun coin and based upon condition has a little extra value, also any earlier lincolns with mintmarks are good ones to keep. Like 1910 S, 1911 D or S, 1912 D or S, etc. They are more common after 1916 . Look for a 1931 S, that is a good one. You may also , by chance have a 1922 without a mintmark, that could be a good one too.

    Have Fun,
    Bill
