I was invited to this forum by another member who I have known for many years. I have been a member of the PCGS CU forums for years and have enjoyed their World and Ancient Forum. Sadly however, that forum has declined over the last few years and there are now very few new posts. I still have lots of friends over there many of whom I have met in person and who will remain friends for life. But... I am very happy to have found CT. This Ancient forum has breathed new life into collecting ancients for me, this can be a solitary hobby and having all of you to bounce ideas off of sure means a lot. I work in a coin shop, belong to a local coin club and have other collecting friends here in the area, but none of these places or people care about ancients, so this forum and it's people have become very important to me. Now, before I buy a coin I consider what all of you will think about it. The wealth of knowledge, and generosity in sharing that knowledge set all of you apart. No matter what the question is, there are several people here with an intelligent answer that they are willing to share. I deeply appreciate the kindness with which all of you have welcomed me into your group and all that I have learned as a result of being here. I hope I can repay a little of that as time goes buy.
I think that this is overall a very nice and cordial place to be...even outside of the ancients forum...
I enjoy your posts. I enjoyed them on CU too. I too have slowed posting my new stuff on their. It's pretty dead there so it's a waste to me to post anything new. I still lurk on several areas on it though.
Well, this forum is better off with you and many of the newer posters. I enjoy seeing all the coins and reading the discussions. As a retiree, I need this forum, not only for talking with all of you, but to give me an escape from the humdrum of daily life. I learn from everyone here, including some that have obsessions with ......(nah, not worth saying). Thanks to all for being here and being inclusive. We enjoy a lonely hobby except for places like this.
If it was that Stevex guy that invited you here, watch out... oh wait. Seriously though, sometimes I find this place to be a double edged sword. You learn so much, see so much, but the temptation to buy what you see drains the wallet so badly.
This forum opened me up to the possibility of collecting ancients. I never even knew about ancients before CoinTalk! This is why I am a Supporter. A coin for the thread:
Two years ago I didn't even know what a denarius or a drachm was. This forum has taught me most of everything I know about collecting and researching ancients. The people here were welcoming and patient with me as I PMd them asking them the most basic and stupid questions in the world. But people here never lost their will to help me and show patience as I learn and grow in this hobby. If it wasn't for @John Anthony in particular, I would not have half the coins in my collection. LOL If it wasn't for @stevex6 I don't think I'd have as many cool animal coins as I have now. If it wasn't for the great threads from distinguished members such as @dougsmit , @Cucumbor , @Bing, @Mat , @red_spork and many others (I could literally list a dozen more names) then I would not have been exposed to so many coin types, Kingdoms and Empires of antiquity, and so much cool stuff surrounding this hobby. And if it wasn't for people like John Anthony and @Smojo , whom i can always shoot a private email to on a whim and discuss specific coin types I might be thinking about buying, and other aspects of this hobby, my collecting experience would not be as rich and rewarding as it is. Even though I've not met any of you in person, I feel like I've gotten to know many of you rather well, and I consider you my coin bros.
I'm retired too and feel much the same way. I find real companionship here with great people that have the same interests that I do. You can't ask for much more.
I've said it before but I really don't think I'd be a serious collector if it wasn't for all you good folks. The kindness and knowledge here is top notch.
I fully agree with Aethelred concerning Coint Talk. Have said it before, but I'll say it again: the ancients section of C.T is today the most active and interactive forum on ancient coinage that I am aware of. I frequent ancient coin forums in german, spanish, french and a couple in english language. Nothing beats C.T, period. Not just interactive, but also informative and above all, helpful. I was not always like that!! I signed up here in 2007 - back then, and for a couple of years after that, it was not exactly slow, but nothing like what it is today. A post would typically maybe attract 5-8 responses, tops. Things really started to change, as far as I recall, around 2011 or so. It has gotten better since.
It's the diverse mix of people and collecting interests that makes this place a little unique online numismatic cafe. Plus, if I'm having a bad day I usually can come here and read something Steve has posted and it puts a smile on my face.
i concur with everything everyone said, CT ancients is the best bar none. a very exclusive club that's open to anyone interested. The regs rock here. i'm glad i found you all. a common interest with a smorgasbord of personalities and backgrounds. i find entertaining, informative, fascinating, funny, and good to be around. a great forum with super peeps! i learn something new everyday here and always look forward to seeing the your next post and try to add something you'll like too. it reminds me of being a kid again becoming aware of what we have and curious of others stuff... show me yours and i'll show you mine><
