Number 1: I have a few key DD dates where the date, etc. is unusually thick but does not show any definite signs of double striking. Could these be subtle double dies? PS, they're Lincoln Wheats Number 2:I have a 1958 D Wheatie that is unusally clean and bright, and seems to shine. It has possibly been lightly circulated as parts are turning rainbow colored. Is this a proof? All the best, -Ilya
I'm certainly not gonna say it isn't possible - but it is unlikely. The dates were stamped into the dies on an individual basis for each year. So it is more likely just variances in the date punch. With a D mint mark it is not a Proof. But based on your description it sounds like an uncirculated example that has been stored in an album or perhaps an envelope by the previous owner.
I have found that wheat cents in original bank wrapped rolls, the 2 coins on each side, will have a somewhat rainbow tone to them, more of a darker rainbow tone, I think they make very very nice examples to place in a binder...
