A lot of interest in Ike’s lately. With all the buzz I’ve got into it as well. After making a rough pass at 356 of my 556 Ike horde this is what I found.

One, 71-D, Ex-45, die crash talon head + jaw line
One, 71-D, AU, die crash talon head + peg leg
One, 71-D, AU, die crash talon head
    Two, 72-D, AU, peg leg
Eight, 72-D, AU, die crash jaw line
One, 72-D, AU, die crash talon head+jaw line + peg leg
Two, 76-D, AU, type I + peg leg
Three 76-Denver, AU, type II+ peg leg
    Total value $33

I took my new found Ike knowledge to a coin shop for some cherry picking. Got:
One 76, MS63-65’ish, type I + peg leg. I paid $6.00 and think it’s worth $25.00-$50. May get it slabed.
    One 76 proof 64’ish, type I + peg leg. I paid $11.00 worth around $20.00
    One 76-D ms62-63’ish type I + peg leg. I paid $6.00 worth around $5.00 =(

I can’t take pictured and my scanner only picks up the peg legs.

Nice - I find that very interesting. What is the Jaw clash, I haven't seen that before

It’s when the chin and neck leaves lines around the earth on the reverse.

    …and I put crash not clash didn’t I, oops.

Quite a few peg legs I haven't seen. Here are two I found some time ago. The first is a 1971-S BS. The 'E' in WE is doubled. Billy Crawford has listed it as CDDO-002. The second is a 1972 with Reverse C, with an extra eyelid clash.

Wild! double E. that’s a new one to me.

The fields around the bust and the motto are heavily abrraded as if they (mint employees) were trying to hide something. Too bad they missed the E. I did overlays, just to make sure it wasn't a clashed die and nothing would match up.

All 1976 Type 1 IKEs are of the pegleg variety including the proof coins. The real money would be in finding a serifed R on a Type 1 BiCentennial coin.

That said, die abrading does occur on these coins which then creates a "fading pegleg" which, if it occurs on a high grade coin, could bring a considerable premium to an astute IKE collector.

The upside to your finds is that its great that you and others are finally looking at these coins! :high5:

I forgot to add that the abrading on the die is not necessarily an attempt to hide anything as much as it is the mints attempt at "saving" the die. The Philadelphia had ready access to replacement dies whereas the Denver facility was not afforded that particular "luxury". Replacements dies had to be ordered from Philadelphia. The net result is that there are far more Denver Die Abraded peglegs than Philadelphia. Given that, if you run across a good die abraded Philadelphia coin, hand on to it since these are not that easy to obtain. I'm not saying that they are rare as much as I am saying they are uncommon.

I might have to pull my Ike set out and take a look at them... I haven't looked at that set in over 10 years.

I also was able to pick up about 30 mint sets (with Ikes) at face value last month... Going to have to go through those as well.

Anyway have a good reference site for Ike Varieties?
