I just purchased a small lot of Indian Head cents and have a few questions that I hope the forum can help with.
    Question #1:
Is this 1864 an L or not an L? Hard to tell in this low grade but I'm leaning toward no L

    Question #2
What's going on with this lopsided planchet? I assume it is PMD but the coin is otherwise flat and circular??? Could it be a clipped planchet?
    (1864 included for circular comparison)

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Isn't your 1864 copper-nickel? If so there's your answer....

It's okay, man; we've all been there. Sometimes things just don't click until someone else mentions it. :)

The 1864-L can be ID'ed w/o the "L" showing by the Indian's pointed Bust. You do not have one.

    Probably just damage.

The 1872 looks like it was just circulated a lot. After all, it is 146 years old... :)

I'm pretty sure it is damaged. That's why it is not round.

When the rim was dented it probably pushed metal up around the edge as most dents do. But then it got word down flat again thru circulation, leaving only the misshapen periphery and an otherwise flat coin.
