she said she opened a roll of quarters to put in her tray and got this clip. she asked me what it was worth and I told her I had no idea except it was worth more than 25 cents. I told her I couldn't get an opinion from you folks without a photo so she lent it to me for a couple days so I could ask. this isn't mine...but all the bags I fill in their coin machine twice a week I was hoping to do something nice for her. if you could give me a rough estimate for her it would be appreciated.

    Strange, no Blakesley effect.

    Possibly a PMD

Don't know if a Blakesley effect (weakened details 180 degrees from the clip) is always present, but the coin details right at the clip look too crisp. If it were a pre-mint clip, there would be some metal flow towards the void and some distortion around the clip area. I vote for post-mint damage.

Looks like PMD. No Blakesley effect and the shape of the arc looks incorrect. The edge looks like it was cut to appear curved with a straight cutting tool.

thank you for your responses. I will tell her the bad news. what is the blakesley effect?

the rim opposite the clip will be flat and poorly formed, this effect is known within the hobby as the "Blakesley effect" and occurs due to the absence of pressure in that area during the upset (or rimming) process.

I don't think it's a genuine clip. The rim does not flow into the clipped area but abruptly ends like it was cut.

Be sure to give her the coin back and pray she doesn't think you switched it with your own man-made clip.

Can you get a shot of the edge on the clip?

Blakesly effect on an IHC. Look at the weak strike across from the clip

I actually had to return it as promised. close up it looked something applied pressure from both sides and did it. like finger nail clippers. I don't know if that is helpful at all

are you talking about the area between the A and 2nd S in states on the rim area?

You guys are like the Jedi of coins, the knowledge is strong and educational. [emoji120] .Worthy I am not..
I enjoyed reading that.well done guys.Another case solved by the Coin Capers.[emoji106] and a damsel no longer in distress.
I (and others) learned something there.
Being new to this,I would have automatically thought error due to my lack of experience. Thankyou for that.[emoji1]

Was the roll all new quarters of the same kind?

I know next to nothing about this subject, so educate me.

Bank teller opens roll of 2015s, presumably unc and fresh from the mint. Where do you suspect the clip could have occurred?
