Yes, both are but(t) coins---coins with issues and flaws, yet both appealed to me at the right price and would give my poor sole Billon Tet of Nero from Antioch a bit of company, while still allowing me to secure a high grade sestertius or denarius sometime during 2016. As this extended auction finally came to an end, both coins grew on me after countless viewings; they both look 'ancient' and have some notable aspects in their favor. The As, though heavily worn and relatively common, has a wonderful toning and is largely well centered with all the key devices clearly visible; The Dupondius, also well centered with legible legends, appears to be a bit 'high relief' and a bit scarce, although the 'encrustations' and a flan crack detract from it more than a little. I suppose, I will 'soak' it a bit and see if the encrustations in the fields can be 'gently' persuaded to leave the premises Dupondius of Nero; Rome mint,; RIC 523 IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P Laureate head left, globe at point of neck Victoria advancing left, holding wreath and palm VICTORIA AVGVSTI S C As of Nero, Lyons mint; RIC 533 IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P PP Bare head right Genius standing left holding a patera and a cornucopiae, altar in field GENIO AVGVSTI S C Both imperfect, but nice for a budget 'set' and I love copper and bronze Please feel free to indulge yourself and post any coin type of this Emperor or the devices.
My understanding is that @Pishpash has the alchemical recipe for removing that gunk without damaging the patina. You might want to PM her if you want to clean them.
Wonderful portrait on the dupondius and nice reverse on that as! Nero is one of my favorite emperors to collect. He has a wide array of artistic coins, particularly the bronzes. Needs a reshoot. My photography has improved since taking these pictures. I really like that As! What a quilt of colours. Unsettling as it looks, the green on my Temple of Janus As hasn't been active in the last two years. This one from Antioch has the distinction of being coin #0001 in my collection spreadsheet. Lastly, a good ol' flying Victory.
I got two asses this year but neither made the top ten list because they knocked each other out of the running. They are the Temple of Janus type. The first upgraded my similar coin that I have had for a long time but this one has better surfaces so the upgrage was obvious to me. It is the less common version on asses using TERRAMARIQ (on land and sea) rather than VBIQ (everywhere). The long version is normal on sestertii but less so on asses. Next came an VBIQ but the temple faces left instead of the more common right. My normal VBIQ right as is still the highest grade coin of the type I have. I still need a portrait left coin but I was hoping that would be a sestertius. Unfortunately, the big guys tend to sell for more than I pay. This is a type that being full legend really means a lot to me but most people would rather have no wear so my problem coins were destined to be mine. Maybe I'll find a reasonably priced, full legend sestertius with left portrait. Maybe I won't. The one below would do. http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1385861
those are nice MZ. look ancient, but still good details. actually, these are about the only versions of these coins that i can afford. i don't have an as or a dupondius of nero.
Nice, i only have one Nero coin right now. Nero. AD 54-68. AE As 10,07g, 29mm Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck circa AD 66. Bare head left, with globe at point of bust / Genius standing left, sacrificing from patera over lighted altar and holding cornucopia. RIC I 534; Lyon 230; WCN 595.
Here are my Nero sestertii. The aesthetic horse heads on the arch on the first made it a "must have" for me: The Port of Ostia sestertius was always near the top of my wantlist. It's not a particularly rare type but it's hard to find nice. I had to battle a bit for this coin but don't regret it at all.
Not sure that my magic soup would suit Micky's coins. It would certainly "clean" up Doug's green example, but that would be criminal.
The horses are fantastic but the figural reliefs around the arch are astounding. What a coin! (both of them)
I can finally speak...my bulging eyes and dropped jaw back to normal.... What a fantastic duo of coins.
