Befitting my 'fickle' manner of collecting, I just added this nice bronze with Dionysos on both the obverse and reverse. I'm always a 'sucker' for big bronze coins with a bit of eye-appeal. Please feel free to post whatever seems relevant. AE-25 of Maroneia, Thrace, circa 147-145 BC 13.5 grams, 25 mm; Moushmov 3946 Head of Dionysos right, wreathed with Ivy; Dionysos standing left holding grapes and thyrsos (?) above monogram (Delta Y).
Lovely coin my coin friend. Just lovely. MARONEIA, THRACE AE24 OBVERSE: Wreathed head of Dionysos right REVERSE: Dionysos standing naked, holding bunch of grapes and two narthex wands, monogram to lower left, Greek legend DIONYSOU SOTIROS MARONITON ("of Dionysos, saviour of the Maroneans") Struck at Maroneia 148 BC 10.94g, 24mm Sear 1638
Cool coin Bing!! I assume mine also reads the same as yours (at least it seems to) ...and now I have to google 'narthex wands' LOL
I have a wee tad... small, worn, but Maroneia. I really have a limited selection of Greek coins, but this one was given to me de gratis due to a shipment mistake. Kind of the person to send it on his nickel over a $10 boo-boo (that was fixed too). MARONEIA THRACE Head of Young Dionysius AE18 Obv. Dionysius right Rev. Dionysius standing holding bunch of grapes Weight:4.59 gms. Size: 18mm (@TIF you helped teach me how to attribute this as I felt it was another Philip II)
We don't completely agree here. I'd say "plenty" of eye appeal rather than "a bit". Got yourself a winner there, Mikey.
Kyzikos, Mysia, EL stater, 450-430 BC, 19x15mm, 16.09 g. OBV: Youthful Dionysos reclining left, on the back of a panther moving to right, holding a kantharos in his extended right hand and resting his left arm on the side of the panther; to left, below knee, tip of his thyrsos; below, over panther’s legs, tunny fish left.
A great looking coin! Maroneia, Thrace, AE18 2nd century BC. Head of young Dionysos right, wreathed with ivy and band across forehead / MARWNITWN, Dionysos standing left, holding grapes.
Wow Mikey-Z, that's a sweet OP Double-Dionysos (congrats) I don't think I have the cool AE version ... ummm, but I do have this humble and slightly over-cleaned silver version
Mikey, I really like the title of this thread. Double dose of Dionysos means a second glass of wine, or maybe even a second bottle! Great coins.
