Hello all Can anyone help me id these 2 tiny coins? The silver one weighs 0.28g and measures 1cm across, and around 0.5mm high. A wisp. The gold (colour!) weighs 1.3g, 1cm across, 1mm high. Only one side has any real detail to speak of, the other side is worn nearly smooth away. The measurements are perhaps approximate but are as close as my failing eyes can determine, given the tiny size of both. Any clues on identity much appreciated.
The first one looks to be an old english penny. I'm not sure which monarch is on the coin but it looks like it might be an Edward II issue. EDIT (I think it might actually be an early halfpenny) Here's a comparison coin I found on the internet of an Edward II penny (not my pictures). I have no idea what the second coin is.
Thanks very much for your reply. Based on what you say and with a little more researching, I'm inclined now to think it could well be an Edward II farthing as the lettering and weight are a very close match. LON on reverse indicates the London mint. The second coin is quite difficult and the depictions on (possibly?) the obverse are very simplistic in design - more or less a stick figure of some kind. One thing I'm inclined to believe tho is that it is British of origin. Thanks again
I'm thinking now of the second coin is that it's nothing more than a Barbarous Radiate of sorts - an anepigraphic and incredibly simplified imitation of the Roman "Victory left holding wreath and palm" common design.. possibly minted from billon. I hope I'm wrong!
