I have mentioned that I am always tempted by Tetrachy folles. They are very tactile. I came across a few with decent silvering remaining and snagged a couple of them, one from Siscia and one from London. I don't remember the last time I saw a London mint one with decent silvering as they are so often either black or toned bronze. Here that are:- Galerius AE Follis Obv:– MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, Laureate bust right Rev:– GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, left hand holding cornucopiae and right hand holding patera Minted in Siscia (_ | B / *SIS). A.D. 296 Reference:– RIC VI Siscia 98b Diocletian AE Follis Obv:– IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG, Laureate, cuirassed bust right Rev:– GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae Minted in London (None). from A.D. 303 Reference:– RIC VI London 28a Martin
The Diocletian is my favorite of the two. When I travelled to Croatia, I never made it to the Siscia mint, but Siscia coins were for sale at all the markets. Most were not in the best of shape, but if a person had the time to go through them all, I would suppose one could find some decent coins for practically nothing. I just never really had much free time and when I did I was with others who couldn't care less about ancient coins.
Very nice Martin, your Galerius is nicer than mine that i just posted, i love these big coins..:thumb:
