1886-S Morgans are tough to find nice and the price increases quickly, as the grade goes up. The 1899 has a LOW mintage and is more desirable with smooth, original surfaces. GTG if you'd like.
Is there something going on with that 1886 S mint mark? At first glance it looks like a repunch or something.
I'm terrible at grading from photos, especially Morgans, so will just opine that both are very choice and great looking!
I have no idea where the AU guesses are coming from? The 1886-S is a 63 and the 1899 is a 64 CAC. Both are graded by PCGS. Both look 64+ or 65 to me. I have looked at dozens of 1886-S coins, in 64, that don’t look this good. Thanks for playing.
Well a AU-58 can look pretty darn close to a 63 and probably the lighting but it looked like luster rub on the hair above the ear and above the forehead plus left wing tip on the s . The 99 just looked like minor rub on the reverse but again maybe just the lighting. One thing though the 99 has quite a few fine scratches showing on the cheek unless that is on the holder. Your Coins are Very nice though no doubt .
If you know the dealer who is selling those in AU-58 holders, led me to him! I don’t collect Morgans, and I quit buying and selling over 10 years ago, but acquiring those coins at AU-58 prices would be like tapping into a money machine. I would have guessed MS-64 for both.
