Hi everyone! I recently found these two hammereds, but am unsure as to the kings. The cut penny has to be either Henry III, John or Richard? It weighs 0.6g's. The half penny, well I think it is, weighs 0.5g's, and has a diameter of 14mm's, again it seems to read RIC, so Richard, but which?! Looking forward to hear from you! Thank you in advance.
It's hard to make out, so perhaps others can extrapolate information from the other parts of the coins? They are cool in any case. English hammereds are always awesome. On a side note: what is that on your avatar? I may want one.
Still Batty mood, don't know if you got my reply ewomack as I forgot to sign in, der! So thanks and it's me Clanger! You obviously don't remember the series, "The Clangers." I've got Soup Dragon too! Ah ha!
All of the short cross pennies were issued in the name of Henry II, so the ‘ric’ you see is a part of the legend ‘Henricus Rex.’ This one will be difficult if not impossible to fully identify since it is cut in half. the long cross penny might well be a Richard II or III, but I am no expert in these.
Hi @clanger I think your first coin, the cut halfpenny, is from the reign of John. More specifically, it's a class V cut halfpenny from Canterbury. On the reverse the visible legend is CA+IO which is probably from a John moneyer with a long name since Canterbury is only two letters. The style of beard and hair on the obverse also point to John. The coin below (not my coin) is a class Vb3 from moneyer +IOHAN·M·ON·CA and is an example out what your coin might have looked like when minted. The second coin is a halfpenny of Richard II from the London mint.
