I am trying to identify the following coins so that i can sell them for a charity. I have no idea what this coin is and it doesn't give me much of a clue, any ideas? I understand this coin to be a English Groat, which King is on the coin? I have found this coin to be a Silver Denarius dated 82BC, identified via this link (bottom coin). I am hoping for a confirmation on this! _pureth
The bronze is of the Kushan Empire, king Kanishka I, Circa AD 127/8-152. The reverse depicts the god Miro. I'll give others a chance to chime in on the Roman Republic denarius and the groat.
The English coin is a half groat from the reign of Henry VII (1485 to 1509). This is the profile issue, which is later in his reign - the earlier ones are full face. This particular example is S2262 in the Spinks books - issued in York by Archbishop Bainbridge (as indicated by the keys on the reverse). The mintmark is a Martlet. Book price in Fine is listed as GBP 70, and in Very fine as GBP 240. If you are interested in selling, I might be interested in buying... Paddy
Thank you Scottishmoney. Thank you PaddyB, i am looking at my Spink book now. It says £225 in F condition and £575 VF. What grade would you say this one is in?
OK - you must have a lter version of Spink? I am using the 2011 version - but that sounds a hefty uplift in only 2 years! It is certainly Fine but not quite up to Very Fine. Probably would be called "Good Fine" or "Fine +" with a price somewhere intermediate. Paddy
Those look like the prices for the very rare "XB" variety, not the standard one. My Spinks gives £65 in F and £200 in VF for the regular Bainbridge one.
Confirming your correct attribution on roman republic denarius - Pub Crepusius Denarius. 82 BC. Laureate head of Apollo right, control symbols before and behind / Horseman right, brandishing spear; P CREPVSI in ex, control-numeral behind.Several other photos of different variations can be found here http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s0283.htmlAbout $50-60 in that condition
Appreciated, thanks PaddyB. Jerome is right, i was looking at the description bellow. Thank you Iamtiberius, the Wildwinds coin page is amazing.. it must have taken so long to compile!
Your Roman Republican denarius is one of P. Crepusius. With the help of other examples, your controlmarks are A and Lizard(partly off-flan under the chin) / 232(only CCXX shows). This issue has ~22 symbols and the reverse controlnumbers run from 1 to about 518.
