... rainbow toned high grade (PCGS/NGC) war nickels. They are tough to find but not overwhelming in price. I bet a set like that would go up in value, and be very cool looking.
the jefferson matte nickle commem set ... or the 1995 gold/silver eagle set ... i know its not what you had in mind.. but they are sets
I find the war nickels don't go so much rainbow as they go a champagne color, but you're right a toned set of those would be sweeeeeeet
This is one that I pulled out of a roll (not mine) and sent off to NGC, along with about 5+ others from the same roll. IIRC this one came back MS67FS! Alomost all of the coins are toned! some better than others....this photo doesn't show it like it should but it is the best I have. When I got the roll from the owner the roll was just like it came from the bank in 1943. The other coins came back. MS66 MS66FS MS66FS MS65FS Since then I have sent off one more for the guy---I think it came back MS65FS also. This coin in the photo is pretty hard to get in this grade I hear---with only a handfull graded higher. Speedy
i'm heading to Baltimore to do exactly this set, albeit in high AU. thanks for letting the world know how cool a set it is -Steve
Black Beauties Anyone remember those? Bad annealing process on Jeffersons in the 50's. I bought a roll of them from my local dealer years ago for the whopping price of face value. He was going to give them away as change. Most were dark grey to almost black but a few had INCREDIBLE spots of Cobalt Blue. I've got them somewhere in my mess. Just wish I knew where.
