I wouldn't be surprised if no one else here likes the coin, but me being me, am pretty excited about getting this very, very worn down coin of Zeno. This coin is another of a series of late Roman and Byzantine coins that were minted at Cherson, or at Constantinople to be used at Cherson (a fascinating area of collecting imo, with a wide variety of different types. Warren Esty has a great page describing them: http://esty.ancients.info/Cherson/ - there is a better example 1/4 of the way down on the page). The ZEN in Zeno is there on the obverse but barely visible, and on the reverse is the emperor holding a spear and globe, with a captive at his feet. The legend is CONCORDIA. Here is more info on this type, from a listing of a way better (but still kind of rough) example on sale (at nearly 100x more than what I paid for mine) at Numismall: - Ancient Coins Canada Numismall listing My coin is basically a hole-filler I'll admit, but I don't expect find an affordable upgrade anytime soon. Zeno, Eastern Roman Emperor (ruled 474-475, 476-491 AD) Obv: DN ZENO PERP (or PERE) AVG, diademed, draped bust right Rev: CONCORDIA, emperor standing right, holding spear and globe, with captive at feet, Constantinople or Cherson mint RIC X 948 (Seller's photos) Another angle
I like your coin also.... ....but I love Ancient Coins Canada....been "my guy" for years. With a coin like this one can make some concessions with condition...but at what point are the concessions replaced with imagination? For ME there wouldn't be enough to identify the coin as such...interesting though.
I guess I'm in the camp that would pass right by this coin. As Anoob said, I think it takes a lot of imagination.
Hey, I see the Giraffe!! ... I see the Giraffe!! ... oh, wait a minute ... *nevermind* just jokes ... beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my Jango friend (congrats)
