Questionable Coin Grading Service Has anybody out there bought the 2005 mint set graded by WGC ( www.worldclassgrading.com )? They just threw the entire set in two holders and graded them MS 70. I got them from Coin Country and found them to be anything but perfect. One of the nickels was dinged to the copper core. Never again.:desk:
If you read through this forum a bit you'll quickly find that there are only 4 grading companies you can trust - NGC - PCGS - ANACS - ICG - that's it, no others. And of those 4, you really should not rely on the grades above MS66 assigned to modern coins by ICG. And I personally am begining to wonder about ANACS.
I have seen many coin sets of 2005 satin mint variety and I dont think I have seen any coins ms69;muchl less ms 70. If any of you have seen these graded by ngc or pcgs; please reply and let me know where you saw them!
According to the website in your post, they only grade baseball cards. They must have taken that expertise and branched out into coins.DOH!
centamint, coin grading is pretty subjective in the best of cases, and borderline criminal in the worst. It has to be one of the most crooked "professions" around. It may be one of the few commercial activities left in America where dealers can very deliberately and intentionally act in a manner to defraud customers without much fear of legal prosecution. I'm not sure whether this situation attracts dishonest people, or if people become dishonest because of the opportunity to cheat without risk. But the risk to people like you and me, the casual hobbyist just trying to get fair value, is extremely high. About the only thing you can do is to stick with the top grading companies and hope for the best; or develop the grading expertise yourself. My personal solution has been to stick with coins that either sell reasonably close to the value of the gold and silver bullion content, and/or to collect fairly inexpensive coins and tokens. Obviously this is pretty limiting for most collectors, but I'm happy with my approach.
This was a learning experience Cloudsweeper. Maybe they have turned to grading coins because the trading card business is in a downward spiral. I'll rely on NGC or PCGS from now on. A good reputation is what people look at in grading. Take care.
