You know sometimes its good to make friends with the local shop keepers. I mentioned to one that I happened to be a coin collector. This beauty was given to me for free along with several international coins. This is a mint mark O coin.

She handed me the bag and I saw the words "half dime" and immediately became excited. Can anyone give me a idea as to the grade of this coin?

    -edit-

I know I used staples believe me it wasn't my preferred method of holding it in place.

I am content with that, I knew it was no MS-60. Personally this is a keeper I was just curious what grade it'd be. :D

  6. Any coin given to you as a gift is a score. Congrats! That one is looks somewhere between VG8 and F12 as McBizr notes. I would also need to factor in the reverse as well. TC

Hmmm, unless I missed something, this is the "No Arrows" variety.
And if it is an "O" the coin is worth about 10x the value of a "With Arrows" variety.
    Mintage: 160,000
    Greysheet: Fine = $575

You might have gotten more than you and the shop keeper thought.

I believe arrows stopped after 1855.

I believe you are mistaken. The arrows/no arrows types are with the 1853-O. This is an 1858-O. I made the same mistake at first glance.

    Ah, yes.
Looked at the closeup again and see that now.
Got everyone excited for no reason.

Honestly i made the same mistake when i got it. Its hard to tell. Its a beauty of a coin though. I also got a 1882 5 cent piece also from Canada along with several other coins.

I'd call it a F-12, the LIBERTY looks complete with the I being very weak. It does have a light scratch across Liberty's legs.

The liberty looks intact by the naked eye just looking at it. Whats the price difference between the two grades?

That was very nice..= A Coin given to me is a white looking penny that I picked up in favor of CASH.
