Dear fellow collectors, although my wife is not averse to collecting, she is usually - cautiously speaking - not very pleased with my hobby. Nevertheless, there is a coin in my collection that is warming not only mine but also my wife's heart. I discovered this item coincidentally while I was watching an internet live auction bidding intending to acquire Roman sestertii, which is my major fields of interest. And in the moment the frog depicted on the obverse appeared on my computer screen, it once struck me that this could be a coin for my wife since she is a collector of frog figures. Even though I am usually planning very carefully what to buy, I spontaneously decided to place a bid, which made my wife and me become the owner of this enchanting bronze. Greetings, Marc Aceton Apulia, Luceria, 3rd Century BC, AE Uncia Obverse: Frog Reverse: Grain ear, between I and pellet (mark of value) Thurlow & Vecchi 278var, HN Italy 674var.
Very cool. Nice when another person appreciates something from ones hobby that they otherwise frown upon.
Great coin, and a great reason to buy it! When I was heavily collecting US coins, my wife was very disinterested - she tried to be supportive but she didn't find them appealing. It's a completely different story now with ancients. She has a significant amount of input into my buying decisions, which I greatly appreciate: she is a talented artist and has a great artistic eye. We often go through catalogs together and she'll pressure me to buy certain coins that speak to her, or dismiss many coins. I always laugh and tell her how many millions of dollars of coins she skipped so quickly with her finger on my iPad. She doesn't want to start a collection of her own (yet...), but she does tend to live somewhat vicariously through mine.
Again, wife-wise, it sounds like we're all in about the same boat. Some are easier to rock then others, but they all rock. Maybe it's my sight, but I'm having trouble seeing the frog.
Cool coin. I am glad your wife likes it. I started collecting Thai coins because my wife is Thai. Now I have a pretty extensive collection of Funan, Dvaravati, Lanna, Sukothai, Ayuddayha, and Siamese coins, along with modern Thai coins, and nothing. She still is not interested.
What an excellent little coin! I am quite amused by the idea of an ancient coin with a frog on it because a popular Chinese feng shui prosperity charm is the "money frog" or "money toad". It's typically depicted as a frog sitting on Chinese cash coins with a coin in its mouth : So now you've got a prosperity charm as well. And much cuter than the typical ones. Congrats!
