I recently picked this up from my lcs basically bought it on a whim because of its design and price. Now here is the thing, besides knowing its a penny token and the year. Is there anything special about these? I'm always curious about a series and possibly getting more. Is there a list or guide for tokens? I tried googling but did not find any info. Sorry for all the questions but I'm still not too familiar with world coins and even less with tokens.
Hey ice, these are real neat to collect along with the various other Canadian tokens available. I have about 6 of these, one of which is an ICCS graded MS-61 that was a pretty penny. They're not particularly rare, there are some older tokens that are worth more money. I have Whitman's Haxby Canadian Price Guide, it will have all the pre-victorian photos, informational, and pricing that you need to go along with the moderns and full descriptions of varieties. The guide is about $20 and the author, Dr. Haxby, is a foremost expert in anything related to Canadian.
Get a copy of Charlton's Canadian colonial tokens and it will have all you need to get into this area. There are other books more in depth and research, but the Charlton Token book should suffice. There are more about 15 Upper Canada Tokens with St george and the dragon in the half penny and penny denominations dated 1850, 1852, 1854 & 1857. Most are very common, but there are a few nice varieties and you should be able to pick them up in F condition (as a start) for less than $5.
Thanks for all the info. I'm going to get a copy of the books when I get a chance. If its a short series I may try to get a complete run.
