This AE-20 was offered on FORVM'S free auction site by a seller I have purchased from numerous times before and seemed to be obtainable at 'low retail' until the last hour of the auction when it went for about 'average retail' shipped. It's a very scarce type and in FINE + grade with substantial 'circulatory' wear. But the devices, although heavily worn, are well centered, the legends decipherable and so it caught my eye and interest. Livia and Tiberius facing each other plus a tetrastyle temple containing a statue of the deified Augustus within were more than I could resist----although I wish I had a bit more room in my budget for an example with sharper details..... The Greek inscription appears to mention the pro-consul Petronius and the fact it was struck in Pergamon while he held that office.... AE-20 of Mysia, Pergamon---P Petronius, Pro-consul, circa 27-35 AD Draped bust of Livia, laureate head of Tiberius facing each other. Tetrastyle temple with 'clipeus' (military shield) in pediment, containing statue of deified Augustus with spear. RPC 2369; 4.13 grams Please post any dual portrait coins you may wish to share
I always felt TWO HEADS were always better than one... cool provincial MZ...facing bust are always neat..that temple with the statue is awesome. was there a giant statue of augustus in pergamon?
@Mikey Zee , I recognize that coin also. I bought 3 coins from that seller 1st time. Just paid last night so not even shipped yet. Was having jitters being 1st time dealing with this seller. Emails seems to be honest dealer, glad to see someone else has bought from him successfully. I can set the worries behind me now. Nice addition by the way!!
I'm uncertain but I'm sure there were and this 'type' was probably well known at the time. Great seller and the coins are promptly shipped. Thanks for the comments and posts guys!! Have you noticed Livia looks a lot like the 'wicked witch' of the West Or perhaps Brian nailed it and her 'expression' is due to Tiberius' extreme halitosis I LOVE the two (or three portraits) for one types (but I seem to get outbid on most i went for)......seems like you're getting more than your money's worth LOL I'll add one like Brian's RR janiform, one of Pompey and Philip II with Serapis:
Moesia Inferior, Marcianopolis. Caracalla with Julia Domna (117-217 AD) Macrinus and Diadumenian, Thrace Marcianopolis 217-218 AD.
Livia was the mother of Tiberius and widow of Augustus when the OP coin was issued. Below she appears jugate on an AE19 of Ephesus with Augustus during his lifetime giving her the unusual situation of appearing jugate with more than one emperor.
Awesome coins, everyone! I can actually contribute my own coin to this thread. AUGUSTUS WITH AGRIPPA I'm not home to take my own pics right now, so here's the seller's: Erin
That's a cool coin Doug---a type I'd love to have.... and it hadn't occurred to me that any of the Imperial ladies appeared on the coinage of more than one Emperor. The only possibility that comes to mind is one of the Julia's from the Severan dynasty...but if one did, I'm sure you would have posted it. That's a very nice example Erin--the skinny Croc version of which I STILL only have half..... Wonderful posts everyone!!!!
