This was a part of a low-grade lot of Byzantines, mostly large coins. At under $3 a coin, it was a pretty good deal. Here's one of the more decrepit ones, and a bit of a puzzle. You'll have to excuse the not so great photograph. It appears to be the consular type of better style, S 533. Based upon the reverse small m, I thought it might be Phocas, but it seems to me that the obv. legend fairly clearly says dnTiu.... Sear notes a variant of the legend with the above one I just mentioned, at years 8 and 9. I suppose the unclear date could say Iu/II. Unless I'm missing something, I didn't see a small m noted in the DOC descriptions of this type. 10.39 g.
Ok. I was a bit fooled. Usually the ones of Tiberius II and the early Maurices are of big, klunky style. This https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/bi...ne_578582_antioch_follis/1607351/Default.aspx example is of a bit better style than the big, klunky bust normally seen. Perhaps it was this celator?
