Found this penny and it's damn near smooth. It look a whole lot better than it really is, probably because there isn't enough petina on it yet but both sides are so slick you really can't feel the impression at all on most of the coin. Any clue how this happened? I noticed the thing has no edge or rim to speak of and I'm wondering if that is the reason for all the wear? Could it have come from the mint rimless? Or did whatever wear it out wore out the rim too? Washing machine maybe?
Ever heard of dryer coins? Ever been to a laundry mat and listened to noises coming from the machines that actually does sound like coins stuck in there? coins can be in the inside tumbler but many times the dryer is not 100% maintained. So a coin can go into the lint collector which doesn't fit 100% or has a tear in it .. big enough for a coin to get through and end up inside the machine. It can Tumble inside the mechanism or get stuck and rolled in it. Have you ever thought of what happens when a coin gets stuck inside some machine that rotates, spins or something like that? The various ways it can get stuck? This is one potential outcome. it gets a bunch of wear really quickly. And since the coin moves, rotates against the mechanical movement it gets worn all around. if you google "dryer coin catcher" you can get a wealth of information.
