I have been kicking around the idea of completing the Proof sets from 1936 to 1942. I have the 1936 and '42, but few sets in the middle. The trouble is I really like the Walking Liberty Half Dollars in Proof and to a lesser extent the Mercury Dimes. The cents, nickels (except for the 1937 Buffalo, which I have) and quarters don't do much for me. So I dabble when these coins when I see them at a fair price. I found this one at the Summer FUN show. It is in an NGC PR-65 holder. I spotted another one that was in a PR-66 PCGS CAC holder. The guy wanted $950 for it. He said the price was high when he quoted it to me. The piece was a tiny bit better than this one, but hundreds of dollars better. He had two other more common dates with the CAC sticker for which he wanted equally high prices.
Well, count me jealous I'd love to be able to put together those early US proof sets - or, for that matter, even see some of the Seated Proof Sets that become mythical "someone brought in a complete run" white whales, always talked about, but seldom seen. Beautiful coin. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, me too! Gorgeous coin! Thank you for posting it. I'd be thrilled to get just one early Walker proof.
I don't think that it has ever been dipped. It has some of the haze that these coins got from the original sleeves in which they were shipped. I thought that it was a high end PR-65.
I think it is probably a gold bean 65. Very high grade 65/ borderline 66, because of the haze. It is a very attractive coin, IMHO.
Nice coin! One of the things I like about it is that the dies haven't had all the detail polished out of them. I don't know if this is a problem with 1937, but 1941s are plagued with overpolished dies, which is not what I want in a proof.
beautiful proof, JM. I have 2 of them would love to have the others but the problem is everybody wants them too!
That is an absolutely beautiful coin. I have a complete proof set for 1942. I resist the urge to look for 36-41 proofs. Maybe in the future.
Beautiful. I finally picked up a 1941 PF-66 last weekend for a set I am putting together. Took a lot of looking to find a nice piece that was not hazy and had mirrors. I can see myself picking up other dates.
