'99 Jefferson nickel with possible DDO?? I found this guy on the third roll of my first box of nickels since beginning CRHing. I had to doctor the pictures to counter the intense light of the Celestron, so forgive the funky colors. Is this a doubled die specimen, or is it strike doubling?
It looks to "shelf like" which is what they call it. A true doubling would have two sets or numbers, images, words, etc. each one would be struck to the same height. Hense why they call strike doubling shelf like as the second image is flat and lower than the original. For example a 1955 DD wheat cent clearly has two 1955 dates struck on it. This coin is completely strike doubled. The other tell tale sign of strike doubling can be found on the G and O of God. If the doubling occurs on both sides it strike doubling. There is inside and outside doubling on the O and the t bar portion of the G is the most evident spots.
I was hoping it was a doubled die, because I saw serif splits on the "L" and "E" of liberty, but I did see that they were subued, so I wasn't sure at all. Better luck next time, I suppose. Thanks all
