97 $1,000 Bills Found In Cracker Barrel Restroom

For those that don't know, Cracker Barrel is a restaurant/store chain with an Old Timey theme. They serve Southern-style food (great food IMO) and the store sells gift items. Cracker Barrel started in Tennessee and has spread all across the South and beyond. Their restaurants/stores are typically found at interstate highway exits.

Honest woman finds $97K in restroom, returns it

The money was returned to its rightful owner who offered a $1,000 reward. The woman who found the money refused the reward.

My question is - where does one find $1,000 bills today? My bank certainly does not carry them. This story sounds very fishy.

Hmmmmm. I don't know if I believe this story. Could this be a case where the woman who claims to have found the money - and refused the reward offered by the elderly owner of the money - is hoping people will reward her good deed by sending her rewards. During the Christmas season people can be generous, you know.

Or am I just being cynical?

Is completely possible tha the woman who lost the money decided not to call the police (or the money was returned before she would have done so). This all could have happened without other employees witnessing it (or not realizing what they witnessed). Seems unlikely still, but it is within the realm of possibility.

What stretches credibility a little is the bunch of $1000 bills... I guess it's possible for someone to have a few, but even then, would they carry a bunch in their purse? Or even one for that matter? I guess it's possible for an eccentric rich person to exist who does this... but the odds are bordering on the astronomical at that point. (if those are in decent condition... may be half a million to a million worth of bills in collector's value!)

Neat story though... if it's not true, it should be.

You aren't being cynical, you're being realistic. $1,000 bills are not easy to get, as I found out some time back..

I knew a guy who found $28000 and $6000 in the same place( public phone in front of his work post ) within 4 days or so. At the time he was making around $400-500 per month. Both guys gave him something, but you know, he still lives in the slummest slums of Buenos Aires. Not to mention his coworkers laughing at him for the rest of his carrier.
Myself, I returned about $300 to my coworker once, and people started talking behind my back that I stole the money and then changed my mind. Never again.

If it was an elderly woman, she's probably had them for awhile. But still, why would you carry them around with you?

The article said the elderly woman said she was moving to Florida to start a new life. That could explain why she was carrying the money. Also, Cracker Barrels are located at interstate highway exits and they cater to the travelling public. So she could have been carrying the money with her while she drove to Florida. That is if she really exists.

97 $1,000 dollar bills seems fishy for sure.

I believe this has to be a fake. The story was on our local news, one of those kichy pieces they run, and apparently the old woman had supposedly sold her home and belongings and that was what she had. I guess it wasn't specifically implied that money was from the sale, but what else would it be from. Maybe the folks who "found" it had no idea that $1000 bills are not just freely passed around (or printed!) anymore......

Couldn't have happened unless the sale was in 1969 or earlier! That's when the circulation of all bills over $500 was banned as an anti-money laundering procedure.

They are still legal tender, but any bank receiving them would turn them in to the Federal Reserve for destruction.

I am not convinced of the authenticity of this tale. Perhaps the finder made the story up to make herself feel better and get publicity for it.

$1K bills are a PITA to find, and in anything better than fine they sell for almost double face.

I definitely dont believe it. I agree with the OP that she is just hoping the public rewards her. There was a guy in my area who found $10 K over Thanksgiving and returned it and now he is getting rewards from the public. She may have saw that story.

Not exactly the same topic, but here's what one hundred $10,000 bills, all in one place, look like. I saw this years ago in Binion's Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Alas, it's long gone now.
