!935 D Buffalo Nickel

    This is a coin from a friends collection that looks like the lettering is sliding. Also, the mint mark looks like a fat weakly struck D beneath a more defined D. I'm not sure what would cause this or what's it's called. Is it some sort of mechanical doubling?

    IMO, your friend has a late die state coin that has what is known as die deteriation doubling.
