I was browsing commems on the bay the other day and saw a '93 Jefferson Coin and Currency set about to end with the bidding up over 70 bucks. My first thought of course was "bidiots" but I thought just for the heck of it I'd check recent completed auctions. Sure enough it wasn't a couple over- testeroned bidders. I didn't find any that sold for less than 68 dollars. I bought a couple of these sets back in '10 and per my records I paid $27 and $29 for them. It's most unusual for a mint issue that's been out this long to show a marked increase in value like this one apparently has. I was just curious if anyone has heard of a reason for the new interest in these. Has a new variety been discovered recently? What's the scoop? Here's a couple examples. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-Thomas...04?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4abb4f9ed8 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-UNCIRC...46?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item48543b8bb6 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-1994-2...03?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item51abfc1aa3
This set also include the 1994-S Jefferson Matte Proof coin which in MS70 can get quite expensive. I'm frankly amazed that you were able to pick any of them up for $27 and $29.
Yes I agree eveyone poo poos me on these sets the mintage is what 167,703 and the 97 matte 25,000 . The 94 in SP 70 would trend for over a hundred its self ...then you have the Dollar comm to sell also... and if you picked them up for under $30 you stole them.
I'd say the sets have come down a little. Even 10 -12 years ago they both sold for close to a $100 each.
I don't know about ten years ago but when I was looking to buy a couple sets in '10 they were going for no more than 40 if that much. I know I got a good deal on them but it wasn't that huge a rip at the time. That's what I based the thread on.
