9/11 Silver Medal Sales Erupt, West Point Issue Tops 100,000

hree silver products erupted in the latest batch of U.S. Mint weekly sales stats. The best performer was the 2012 Proof Silver Eagle coin, but the most notable was the 9/11 Silver Medal from West Point. The third, which was a Star-Spangled Banner silver dollar, was less jaw-dropping but still a nice jolt in sales.

Issued on April 12, the 2012 Proof Silver Eagle is expected to lead, but the latest increase was nearly 4,000 more than the prior round. 14,449 were purchased compared to 10,490 previously. The new total hit 381,725.

Not a record that impresses me. Almost a full years worth of sales and they've sold roughly 160K pieces. Compared to 382K Proof silver eagles in one month.

I don't think it helps that the design sucks. If they did an advanced representation of the WTC against the NYC skyline, I'd be there. To me, this coin looks like it celebrated the summer Olympics

I agree. Unless someone told me what the medal commemorates, I wouldn't know from looking at it.

It's actually worse than this. All the commems this year completely suck and I'm bored to death with the ASE design. Look at the FIJI turtle. That is a design!

And the Ural Owl and Hedgehog coins aren't no slouch either. The mint needs to get on their high horse and use all that computer laser engraving technology at their disposal. They have no idea the power of the technology they possess, it's kind of scary that maybe the rest of the government is operating on the same line.

Like the design or not, and i dislike the disign, you have to see how much more advanced that is then the San Francisco mint.

I don't see adding color as being that advanced, and the portions that are not colored as nothing to get worked up about. They are still flat and undetailed.

Oh and the WTC medal probably wouldn't even be hitting those low record sales if it wasn't for the fact they are making them in two different mintmarks and one of them being West Point. I would bet if they had been P and D the mintages wouldn't be that high, not if they had just been Philadelphia.

The painted areas are lapped onto high points of the design, perfectly lined up. It is not bad work.
