Checked wexlers and the internet and couldnt find much on 1988 quarter varieties. I am guessing this is mechanical doubling with PMD that makes this quarter appear interesting at best. The "R" and letters around it look pretty off. I figured I would not post a book of pictures with this just to see first if its worth further looking. Opinions?
Thank you Fred and Kentucky. This one was sort of cool because I noticed it without a scope. It looked off. I was thinking the same thing and didnt notice any splitting or anything that pointed toward evidence of a DD. Its hard though because when I research at wexlers, alot of those coins that are DD varieties take a ton of skill and experience to identify considering the errors are so tiny and look like just MD and PMD to the "non" professional coin searcher. I know I could get a true rare DD in pocket change and not even know it.
Something else to keep in mind. A Letter or number is never going to be thinner on a doubled die. If the Letter is thinner than normal, it's MD.
Thanks Oldhoopster. Whats your thoughts on the image below. This is from Wexlers. This is a quarter and a listed variety 1986-P 25¢ WDDR-001 If I seen this in my pocket I would totally think MD. I see no splits, I see "shelf" and nothing by what Ive learned to be DD. whats your thoughts on the pic of this quarter below? Thats what makes this so hard.
