Got this one in change. Funny thing is, I don't think I'd have even bothered to flip it over if it weren't for the date. Didn't find the DDR, of course. But I did find a die that was in big trouble. I'm just including a pic of one of the big cracks at the bottom-right of top of foundation, but there's also another big one, bottom-left. Given those cracks, I figured whatever that is in the first pic has to be die-related, no? Don't know my way around errors enough to say, though. So, what do you all think?
Bottom pic looks like a very nice die crack and the top pic looks like lamination of the thin copper layer. Is the coin really as dark and crusty as it looks in the picture? If so, the lamination appears to be caused by corrosion from the coin coming in contact with some kind of corrosive material. Anyone else?
Craton, that's a 3-D blob. Here's a different angle and some truer lighting. I'm not even ruling out at this point the possibility that somebody didn't come along and spot weld some copper wiring or something like that here. But given the die cracks as evidence this die was failing, I'm siding on inferring some kind of die-related error. Thanks for taking a look. Anything else based on these new pics, please let me know.
Cool. Looks WAY different in the last pic. I'd call what you have a die crack on the bottom and a die chip at the top. Common errors but still, they can be neat like yours is.
Eddie, Is your coin a 83 P or 83 D. In some cases a Die Crack and Die Chip is a PUP but not always. Can you post a picture of the Date and MM? It could be a error coin on the Obverse. Rhubarb
I'm starting to really like what I'm hearing, now. Here's the front end, Rhubarb, as per your request. As you can see, there's nothing noteworthy going on there. Just a reverse, looks like, in some (I want to say, now) big trouble, here.
