I just finished sorting and rolling my 1982 cents. Here is the breakdown (if anyone is interested): 1459 total cents Copper Cents 1982 Large Date - 578 1982D Large Date - 543 1982 Small Date - 36 Zinc Cents 1982 Large Date - 175 1982D Large Date - 22 1982 Small Date - 15 1982D Small Date - 90 About 20% red or red/brown Zero double dies:headbang:
with those odds ..you must live west of the Mississippi here is another link on 1982 cents if your curious a few days ago http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3628&highlight=1982 Snowman
Cool site! I had missed it. I'm amazed at the breakdown here SNemecek. I never paid a lot of attention to the '82 cents but I paid enough to notice there was near parity between the zinc and coppers. It was mid-year they switched over. So look how few of the zincs survive! In those early days the plating was poor which would allow them rot away but the attrition on the zinc cents must be far higher than I've been figuring.
I get similar results. I don't do massive box searches, but one roll at a time and keep the 1982's off in a jar until I get a hundred or so. When I sort, I have results similar to the OP. Only difference might be that I get tons of 1982-D Copper Large Dates and not many P's. The king is the 1982 Small Date Zinc. I firmly believe this will be the flag ship for the memorial series down the road. In other words, the hardest non-variety/error coin in the series - by far.
Could you possibly post a couple of pics so I can get to see the difference between the small and large dates, as to be honest I do get confused LOL
Thats amazing how many "D" cents you found SNemecek living this far east. Ive been always interested in 82 because ive always wanted to know the balance between the 7 different kinds of 82's here is a link a couple weeks ago on 82's if anyone else is interested from here on other 1982 topics http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t48989/ here is the picture of the differences in the date sizes http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1982.html what is real interesting is that 1982s were minted for circulation at the 4 US mints - Phil, Denver, San Fran and West Point Snowman
I know what you mean. I have found it helpful to look at the 8s. The small date 8 looks the same size as the rest of the numbers. The large date 8 looks unusually big. Also look at the space between the 2 and the rim of the coin. The large date is really close to the rim while the small date is farther away. The best way to know is to get one of each. Once you see a small date, they become easier to spot.
More good info but we very rarely see cents over here LOL I have the small zinc D the large copper and the S so far
Thanks for the info....I'm going to put together all the summaries I find into a single Excel sheet. From my personal box searching, the vast majority of 1982's I find are copper. For now, I'm just setting them aside as P and D....I'll get to sorting the Cu/Zn and small/large later. My numbers will be a little skewed because all I keep are those with red and at least AU. I've probably tossed away a few hundred zinc 82's just because they were so ugly I couldn't stand them.
Yep, there are lots of ugly zinc 82's. I counted them first then put them in with my other junk cents to be rolled and taken to the bank.
