I just picked this up today, can anyone shine some light on this coin so I know what I am really looking at? I also heard many of these were counterfeited is mine such an example? Also, the reeded edge on this coin is amazing looking.
I have my 1790 up for grade/price also and i haven;t gotten a response either. I don;t think CT member like the reales
After researching for an hour or so I have a few things figured out. Firstly, mine is a legit coin. Second, 8R stands for 8 Reales, Pi stands for the mint location San Luis Potosi, P.S. stands for the initials of the "Mintmaster" at the time of mintage and it seems that each mint master had a slightly different die used for their initials all over Mexico. As for the 10ds and 20gs that is found on all Reales of this type through all years, I believe to be a form of showing how much silver was in the coin? Here is link to the closest coin I could find like mine. http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Mexico_1841-Pi_JS_8_reales
Here is the info from a catalog, hope it helps. Not sure about your variety, so you can see all the types for this year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KM# 377.12 8 REALES Mint: San Luis Potosi 27.0700 g., 0.9030 Silver .7859 oz.
