When I first looked at this half, I was sure MD on the outer lettering of the reverse. I then saw the lower leg of "E" & last the "S" in States and the "O" in OF. So I didn't know if it was Die Deterioration along with MD or maybe had something. Thanks for your thoughts !

I don't see any doubling on your 72D reverse, only MDD...here are a couple of photos of the doubling on a 72D DDR-001.

I took some closer photos & here are my questions. #1 - If you see MD on a coin , which you clearing see, does that make it impossible to have true doubling on that coin ? #2- On the "E,R & C" of AMERICA you can see the Letter and then two distinct top portions of that letter above it. Does that show it was pressed three times ? Thanks & still learning !!!

What you see on your coin is machine doubling......flat and shelf-like......plain and simple, but to answer your question, yes, it is possible to have machine doubling and true hub doubling on the same coin. The true doubling occurs when the die is being produced, and the machine doubling occurs when the coin is being produced.

Here is an example of hub doubling (69D DDR-015) and MDD (Machine Damaged Doubling) on the same half dollar. What I see on your half dollar is MDD which comes from the die bouncing.
