Well this is my 7,500th post. As this occasion was nearing, I decided to buy myself a present for this auspicious occasion. I like presents (especially ones I choose for myself): C NORBANUS ROMAN REPUBLIC; GENS NORBANA AR Denarius OBVERSE: C• NORBANVS, head of Venus right, wearing stephane, earring, and necklace; XVIIII behind REVERSE: Prow-stem, fasces, caduceus and grain ear. Rome 83 BC 3.8g, 18mm Crawford 357/1a. Sydenham 740. Norbana 1 The reverse type is probably an allusion to the moneyer's father and the part he played in Sicily during the Social war, when he raised troops, organised a fleet, and provisioned the town of Rhegium. This is actually the second coin I own of C. Norbanus; however, the first is slightly different and more common. This new coin is the rarer of the two and in much better condition. This is my other Norbanus:
Super cool reverse, big bro .... yummy Man, I always love seeing AR-RRs (they are very cool, eh?) ... oh, and I also love AE RRs .... gawd, Roman Republic coins are "very cool" => great new score!! cheers ... I like both of your examples (the original version is also very cool)
Bing, My congrats on both occasions---a very fitting RR post as a 'commemorative'. A very lovely coin with all the variations I relish---that reverse is really cool!!
I like your taste in presents. You can buy me one anyday . I see so many RR issues so habitually ill-centered that one like this really stands out.
yeah...i always buy myself the best presents! cool new republican mr bing! wonder what they used to make the circular test marks?
A nice coin. We don't seem to need excuses to buy ourselves coins but I always seem to be able to find a reasonto justify purchaes to myself. Congrats on passing this milestone but more congratulations on purchasing a nice coin, whatever the reason you purchased it.
Bing: Love the Denarii posted. Have that one myself, but in a condition closer to your original Denarius. You made an excellent upgrade! It really shows the original detail of the coin as well as the message the Moneyer was conveying. I love the Republican era the most, and presently focus my collecting efforts there. I have 2 Republican Denarii inbound from overseas, and I cannot wait to get them into my grubby paws! Looks like the Illigitimi are not grinding YOU down!
They try, but I fight back to the best of my ability. I have focused my collecting on the Republic for a couple of years now. Although I think the artistry on Greek coins is the best, I still find myself drawn to the Roman Republican coins. I'll be looking for your post of the new coins.
Bing: I love the artistry of the Greek coins too! I just have a bit of affinity to the RR era for its rich history and being the crucible and foundations of today's civilization. I am deeply, albeit VERY slowly, in the process of organizing, cataloging, photographing, and eventually displaying my modest collection. I am lurking the site to learn as much as I can. Give me some time, I will eventually have my feces consolidated!
I am constantly getting my feces in order. It's a never ending job. My catalog for instance. I always find something I would like to display differently, or a new data string to add, etc. In addition, my computer crashed and I lost everything. Luckily I had an old hard drive from another computer with most of my material stored. That and images I have stored on line helped to put much back in order. The point is I am always working on my collection in some manner or another. Don't wait too long to show us your coins. Then the task becomes too daunting.
Congratulations for the 7500 post milestone. I think you'll break 10,000 by the end of the year or sooner. That's also a nice coin one I'd welcome in my collection.
Great coin, my friend. I'm glad you joined this forum! I haven't seen such a circular banker's mark before, but I don't look at too many RR denarii. Is it unusual?
