Hello, I'm looking for some help in determining approximate values of a couple of coins I just inherited. My father died last year and he had 6 coins that he purchased as an investment about 30 years ago. This is a brief description of each of them: 1877 20-cent piece, choice proof, delicate iridescent toning 1878 Pattern Goloid dollar, J-1563, R-7, struck in Goloid 1878 Pattern Goloid dollar, struck in copper, J-1559, R-6 1867 three cent silver (mintage 625) 1868 three cent silver (mintage 600) 1871 three cent silver (mintage 960) Thanks in advance for any help you can offer ...if it would help, I can try to post photos of the coins.
Howdy PMacNY - Welcome to the Forum !! That's a list of some rather special coins you got there. Values could vary greatly depending on their condition - so yes, please post pics of both sides of each coin and we'll do our best to help you out
GDJMSP, I just tried to take photos of the coins, but my camera isn't good enough to take quality close-up photos of coins. I'll try to borrow a better camera and take some pics ASAP. The coins are all in little clear plastic pouches. How would I go about selling these coins if I decided to do that?
When taking the pics take care to not touch the surface of the coins. I would suggest taking the pics while the coins are still in the holder - just to be on the safe side. To sell the coins you would probably be best off to find a local dealer you can trust.
GDJMSP, I'm not going to touch the coins. They've been inside these plastics pouches for (at least) 30 years, so I'm not going to take them out now. Once I borrow that camera, I'll take the photos while the coins are still inside the clear plastic. Does anybody know of any good (honest) coin dealers in the NYC/Westchester area? Thanks again.
Now I could be wrong...but do you see anything that looks like green gunk on the coins? Some of the old "pouches" (or flips) are made of PVC---if that is the case I would get some NON PVC flips and get the coins out of the old flips.... Look in the phone book for coin shops or dealers and call a few of them...ask if they are members of the ANA--Also you can see if there is a coin club in your town...if there is you may want to see if a few of its members could help you. Let me add something to my last post....I'm not saying that GDJMSP is wrong...more than likely I am...so do take some photos of the coins still in the "flips".... I'm not sure if anybody else agrees on this with me but if you want to sell them (or even keep them) I would get them slabbed by one of the top 4 grading Co...PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS--they will grade your coins and seal them in a hard case holder for long term strorage...you might get better prices if they are slabbed when you want to sell them--slabbing costs about $20-25 bucks per coin--but with these coins I think it is well worth it. Well I wouldn't be against the idea of getting the coins slabbed - but first he needs to know if they are WORTH getting slabbed. And the best way to do that, for somebody that knows nothing about coins, is to start with a dealer. Then - if some are worth the cost - have the dealer submit them for him. NGC and PCGS won't accept submissions unless you are a member. I would also talk to the dealer about the possibility of PVC damage or if any exists on the coins.

The link I gave is the same cdcda gave...the ANA dealers guide... If you find a coin shop go in and look around and get a feel for the place and then ask your questions...if you don't feel right about the place and there is another shop near you try that one.... Speedy
