Thanks to a thread by Physics-Fan I believe I now know I am the owner of a Type II reverse.

As he described in his thread, the dies for this one were pretty worn. Plenty of MD on both sides. No FBL here.

Grades and comments welcome, thanks in advance.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yup, that is definitely a Type II. As I said, 1958 Type II's are much harder to find. Yours appears to be AU from the pics, in hand it could be as high as MS-63. I say that because there appears to be wear at the top and bottom of the bell, as well as on his cheekbones. Most Type II's are lower grade, because they were not in mint sets. Finding a high grade (MS-65 or higher) Type II is a rare find indeed.

Thanks and of course good luck.

I find the doubling on the Obverse very interesting.

Is this caused by die deterioration?

Here are a few other crops from the photo with obvious doubling.

I don't see any doubling in those pics - but there is probably quite a bit of die deterioration. The 1958 Type II's were struck from discarded proof dies, so almost all of them were near the end of their lives. There is considerable die deterioration, evidenced by distorted letters, die cracks, and other things. This is almost certainly what you have.

    59's?

Were the type II's from proofs?

Only thing in my stash is a 59 that resembles a type II...if if is.:computer:

Dok U, its hard to tell, but I don't think thats a Type II. The type II has much stronger feathers, whereas yours are very weak, ill defined, and non-descript. I also think there is a fourth feather to the left, although it is weak. Keep looking though!

    Bummer

Trying again. From the ammo safe. Everything still there.

Now, is it is or is it aint?

That is a proof, so it is definitely a type II. Remember, most proofs in 1956, and all proofs after that, had the Type II eagle.

    oops~

You are so right. My bad. I was distracted.
Not paying attention. Thank you for the correction.

My mind drifted towards the remembrance I had one type II somewhere.

I just forgot the facts.
