I was given $5000 to spend on coins or bullion, what do you think I should buy?

I'm sure you dont want to hear this, buy what do YOU like. If it was me, I'd finish my type set and upgrade a few coins, but I'd imagine your interests are different than mine.

I would personally make a complete set of something fairly small such as Susan B Anthonys, Ikes, or Franklins. I'd then invest the rest in silver bullion.

I think you should put it in a bank and save it tbh, this way you are gaining interest on it . Save for a house, unexpected bills i.e. car breaks down, house needs repair etc. Or give it to me :)

    Apple stock.

Okay, a numismatic answer...I would buy a nice early date large cent. An NGC or PCGS graded chain cent or a 1793 wreath.

Or another key date in a series you like. As you will see from other opinions there are dozens of choices, all guaranteed to make money or lose it.

    A set of 25th anniversary ASE's from me ;)

But really buy what interests you if you don't need the money.
If you do save it in a ETF or something.

haha, yeah, exactly... any of the coins I'm selling ;)

Seriously though, if it's extra money and you know you are going to be putting it towards coins, then buy what you like, not what someone else tells you they like.

That said, if you like higher grade U.S. coins and you're not an expert in grading them... you'll most likely be better off buying certified coins. Additionally, key date and semi-key date coins seem to be easier to sell and seem to hold their value much better than non-keys.

Good luck and make sure to tell us what you decide :)

  9. You could get yourself a few nice double eagles. They go for a small premium over melt, but are absolutely stunning coins

If you don't find anything, simply send the money to me :D

In all seriouseness though. I would buy what you like the most. I personally would buy to "collect" not to invest. If you collect like I do, I would buy some very nice coins to fill some holes in my Danscos.

    Agree with both ideas. LOL

Really, don't go and buy a bunch of junk. Buy a killer, slabbed key date coin. It's MUCH easier to deal with and easy to sell in a pinch.

Buy a nice slabbed (NGC or PCGS) $20 Liberty double eagle. Don't fritter your money away on a bunch of worthless junk, as pretty as it might be.

It's not as often you are in a position to purchase gold in quantity or quality. Sieze it.

I like what everyone is saying to you...buy what YOU like. I would only add, take your time if you need to, making your selection(s). Hopefully it will be fun. Myself, I would nurse it out a bit, savoring the anticipation! (Not to mention changing my mind numerous times...)

Enjoy! And wow! What a neat spot to be in!

What is your motivation? Are you wanting to collect or invest? If you are looking to collect that spend it on what interests you the most. If you are looking to invest, IMHO I would not spend it on coins.

  16. I thought you might recommend a good dental plan. :smile :D Gold teeth are quite pricey out of pocket. :D :smile. TC

I would try to get a 2009 UHR for $3k or less. Then if I were you, I'd buy at least one 25th anniversary ASE set. Because it will be key and looks great. You'd still have plenty left over to get quite a bit. You could buy some gold sovereigns and Swiss 20 Francs for bullion. Gold is on the rise again. Or, type in NGC star on ebay and search highest first. You'll have the rest gone in a hurry! When you're done, you should have several nice coins to be proud of.

Here, I found one for you to sneak into the budget. WOW! I've got one of these with full luster in MS-63 and I though it was impressive! Check this baby out! MS-66*. Love the toning. This would be a major score.

Buy what you like. Me, it would be a clean low grade chain cent

Like others have suggested, its impossible to really answer not knowing many more things.

    1. How liquid are you? What is the chance you may need this 5k back in the future?
    2. Are you a coin collector?
    3. Do you want this purchase to be part of your overall financial portfolio, or is this play money?
    4. If you are a collector, what kind of coins interest you?

Those are off the top of my head what I would wish to know before even hazarding a suggestion sir.

I would suggest banking half and spending the other half on coins of your choice.

I was thinking about a graded 1893 s morgan and a 37 three leg buffalo. Then maybe I'll go for some silver. I have my mercury dimes, jeffersons nickels, and wheat cents done. three short of my buffalo nickels, and about 12 short on my barber dimes.I should probably get a 1928 peace dollar then I'l have all of the keys on them. I'd also like to finish my 2 1/2 gold indian set but don't have enough for that.
