From the Canal Bank circa 1850s ....a lot of money back then! Wish they printed $500/$1000/$5000/$10000 notes today!
Canal Bank sure had a huge number of banknotes printed, it is still possible to find sheets of the $1-$100 notes. Some of the east coast banks, primarily in NYC and Boston printed notes with higher denominations - but I have wondered that it was more for vanity than necessity. Even some $500-$1000 nationals were issued in the 1860s and 1870s, but they are as of now unknown except as printer's proofs etc.
For foreign notes anyways, unissued remainder notes are often much cheaper than signed and issued notes. Not sure about American though.
Quite a bit of the time remainder notes are all that are known, as the issued notes, particularly in the case of Canal Bank, are almost all redeemed and lost. Canal Bank survived into the post civil war era, but was liquidated in 1933. There are some obsolete era banknotes issued from banks like Bank of North America that do have issued notes that were never redeemed and the bank survives as Wachovia, now part of Wells Fargo so Wells Fargo owns Charter # 1 as a national bank. After the National Banking Act of 1864 prior issues of banks that became national banks were not required to be redeemed - but many were, up to as late as the 1910s-1920s.
Would this note have had a printed reverse? If so, would you mind posting it. A very pretty note! Steve
One doesn't seem to support the other... Canada prints $5,000 bills and they don't seem to be the capital of drug cartels, nor are they the preferred currency.
Canada retired the $1,000 bill back in May of 2000. I do not believe Canada prints $5,000 notes. Just read this in the article; " Retired on May 12, 2000, for being mostly used in criminal transactions, any $1,000 note deposited at a bank is destroyed, although the bills — nicknamed “pinkies” by gangsters because of the pinkish-purple ink — remain legal tender."
Huh? They stopped printing $5K notes early in the 20th century. They did have a $1000 as late as 1988, they circulated until approximately 2000. But the Bank of Canada is actively retiring them.
Most obsolete notes are only printed on face side. I think today, Singapore issues the highest denomination banknote....$10000 Dollars/worth same as US $
