This 1912 AU58 Indian $5 gold piece is NGC certified - had it quite a while. Any ideas of worth? Best regards, Ed D. http://yoyospin.com
I find numismedia to be consistently optimistic about prices, my latest grey sheet has the 1912 in au58 listed at 370 bid, 390 ask. Still quite a bit of premium over bullion prices.
Thanks for the feedback. Another question - do you think that selling coins on eBay by an individual is safe and a good way to get a reasonable price?
I agree. Numismedia FMV is more of a starting idea -- ballpark figure for retail and a different resource for pricing than the dealers gray sheet.
One can do well on eBay. Know your items, represent them accurately and fairly. Know how eBay works and what protections the service provides you and your buyers and you should be safe. There is always the risk, if you are not aware of how fee structures work or how to list, represent and value your items, that you could undersell your item. Study completed auctions and get to know the market for your items. Make sure you have a decent reputation, a fair number of successful auctions to your name, and you will improve your chances. I wouldn't start out with zero feedback trying to sell such an item as this. Might be better going to a coin show or dealer and shopping around your coin there. Also, don't overlook CoinTalk's Classifieds section for listing items for sale.
Thanks - I did notice the classified listing on this site, but it says to “log in or register to bid and list”. I could not see a way to register, login, bid or place an ad. Is a separate Classified section registration/login required from the one I just signed up for to access the CoinTalk forum? best regards, Ed D. http://yoyospin.comto Post and Bid in our Classifieds
I'm not sure, but as you are new, you may need a minimum 10 posts or some nominal amount to begin using that section.
Welcome, YoYo. I see you live in Colorado Springs. So do I. We should get together sometime. If I am not mistaken you have to have at least 10 posts to place an ad in the classifieds. That may have changed with the new site though.
Not spam. Rarcoa's sheets are pretty influential; they publish daily, reflecting the price of gold and the coin market's reaction thereof.
If you are not a regular seller on eBay, I wouldn't start with this piece. You're going to lose about 12% to eBay/PayPal fees and on a $475 sale that's $57. APMEX is currently paying $425 for AU $5 Indians. You'll have to pay about $10 to ship it to them insured but it's fast, safe, and there's no hassles involved. http://www.apmex.com/Product/23211/500_Indian_US_Half_Eagles___Almost_Uncirculated_or_Better.aspx P.S. That coin is worth $475 on a retail basis. The $425 price is wholesale of course.
Never been accused of SPAMing before. Very sorry if I've offended you stealer. The CoinTalk rules say it's ok, but I'll never do that again: Signature lines may contain a link to a website which you own or otherwise control, or of your employer. Signatures are not to be used for advertising pitches. They can however be used for informational statements which reflect your character, or other tasteful information about yourself or your coin collection.
