Need a little bit of help before sending off to PMG for grading. I've been following a note at auction for a few days and I'm having toruble figuring out the place of the note in the 1934 series. I'm looking for some second opinions since this note may be one of only three known based on the 9th Ed. Small Sized U.S. Paper Money guide. 1934 - $5 - Dark Green Seal - Mule - Star - Kansas City District (J) S/N Range - J00328853* - J00391305* (only two known) The note I found was S/N J00293385* which would put this note the lowest in the series and does not fit in the LGS or non-mule DGS S/N ranges for FR#1955. After some further research and looking at the PMG note population - there is not a note for FR#1956-Jm*. Could this be the first?
The serial numbers for 1934 Kansas City mule stars begin at 00 840 001 and end at 00 444 000 (last serial estimated). Your note fits right in there. The S&L 8th edition had the comment "only 2 known," but it was removed in the 9th edition at the request of myself and others. I have recorded 18 mule stars.
I was looking at the 8th Ed. - just grabbed the wrong book. You're correct on the 9th Ed. (as I toss the 8th Ed.) It is just strange that PMG does not have a single Fr#1956-Jm* in the registry, there's a slot however. When the note arrives I'm going to go ahead and send it in. Thanks!
The note grade just came in: PMG 55 EPQ - FR#1956-Jm* (DGS, Mule, Star) I had the note as a 50/53 - so the grade was a nice little surprise.
