Basically a star note is a replacement note for a note that was produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) with some sort of defect that occured during the printing process. This could be a myriad of things from an error, to the note being cuaght in the machine while being printed. These notes are rarer than ordinary currency and highly collectible. You can see how rare your particular note is by going to this website: http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/stars/
Thank you very much. It says DC 00042422 * and then C3 under the DC and C1 just above and right of the *. So I assume there are 640,000. Most on Ebay are $15 and less. I think I will hang on to it for a while. Thanks again everyone for all of your help!
By the serial number, this should be a series 2003 $5 Philadelphia Star note from a print run of 640,000 printed in December of 2007
Most of the notes produced in the 2000's are generally notes to hold onto for now, unless super rare. Depending on condition of the note, you may get a decent premium, or none at all. As a star note collector myself, I hold onto almost every one I get, regardless of condition.
Yeah it is not in the best shape. Lincoln is a little faded and there is a really small rip by the security strip. Looks like it was used for a while. Thanks for your help on this. This site is great by the way. Alot of interesting facts and friendly people! Much appreciated!
