I went to Walmart today had to get coffee some coffee. Cheapest in my area by about $3. Decided to go to Kings and get some groceries, found a gaming token Dandy amusement and a Trinidad and Topago, they didn't have hot breakfast sausage. So, I head to Safeway. On the way out I found some dimes and a nickel in the CS. I heard it when I made the grab, Silver. Got to the Truck. The Merc was hiding under the nickel I went for the oldest looking dime. It was a 65' Rosie. WTH? Moved the nickel and this original skin coin jumps out. It has a nice looking original skin. Even though the toning is terminal.
Looking at it again it could be coated in something. I wonder if a soak in acetone will do anything. I've never seen silver coated in Mercury.
Hard to tell in a close up but it looks like it could be the 1942/41 overdate. Silver is good but if it is it’s much better.
I see something behind the 2 but on a genuine overdate the 1 is west of the two and very prominent requiring only ones corrective eye wear (if used) to see. Image courtesy of PCGS A word of caution: Unless you are familiar with this coin only purchase from a trusted source. I found quite a few mis-represented coins including one from a prominent local dealer that was slabbed at MS66 but not attributed as an overdate from a top tier TPG with an asking price of $44,550.
It is the D that is the weaker f the examples. The D also has an RPM, to help identify it. I saw that little glimpse in the truck and it had my hopes high all the way home. Sadly, it is not a 42/41. That is the Philly and it is very strong. The D is much weaker.
Actually, that is the worst you can do, use lighting artifacts as a crutch. As a guy who photos coins, it is real easy to misrepresent a coin.
