I think I got one. Found in the old stuff from the '70's I have. The 2x2 had "1942 D .25" I took it out last night, looked at it, and screamed whooohooo. My wife thinks I am nuts.

What grade? I am leaning toward a VF20.

    Any other comments appreciated.

    Thanks, John

Cool find! The coin has very nice details but looks like it may have been cleaned at some point or possibly it is just some post mint damage on the face and in front of the nose. VF20 is a good grade I think - awesome find any way you cut it!

Nice coin. Those are XF details to me. Definitely better than VF20 details, but it will not grade. Both the obverse and reverse are scratched.

The last pic. The 42 is clearly stamped over 41. You can see the outline behind the numbers.

Great find! :thumb: I agree that it likely wouldn't grade because of the scratches. But that wouldn't matter to me. If you wanted to sell it, I'm sure there's somebody with a Merc dime album that would love to give you at least a few hundred to fill that hole. Maybe more.

    Thanks for the replies.

The photo shows off all the ugly details, I took some with more diffused light that make it look good, but, it is what it is.

I think it has been cleaned in the past, too.

But hey, considering it only cost me .25, no complaints. It was still a thrill to look at it, do the double take and still see it on the next look.

    Take care and thanks again
