Hi, i have recently aquired some 1976 40% silver proof sets. Almost all of the coins are in mint like condition, but a couple have some problems. They are in the original mint 1976 packaging(Eisenhower dollar,Kennedy half, Washington quarter). A couple have spots starting to form on the mirror surfaces(dark toning spots about the size of a medium nail head). Each coin in question has only one of these spots per coin. Do i need to remove these coins from the original holders and have them dipped(before they degrade further)? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
honestly, for the time and emotion you're going to have to invest in fixing these coins, you would probably be better off selling these and buying some sets that you'll like. These are not expensive sets and they are really no problem to find. No matter how much you try, these coins will always have some remnant of either these spots, or what you're going to do to remove them. Better to just sell and buy ones that fit your criteria better..
Depending on what caused the spots they may continue to grow if they are in the same environment. You can dip them but not sure it is worth the effort. You can slow or virtually stop them by either changing the storage environment or sealing them in a bag with no air. I agree, it's probably easier to find a set to replace this one as the cost is minimal.
Proof Coins I just ordered some solution for clad coins, to practice with some Susan b Anthony dollars. I guess i should have ordered the silver solution also. I originally thought of dipping coins as doctoring them under handedly. But then i read the statement that PCGS posted about dipping coins.
