40% halves. What's the point?

In my CRHing I hit a milestone. 100 40% halves found! Woo hoo, right?

Well... that is 14.75 ounces of silver. Today's melt is $17.33.
I "paid" $50 face for them. I don't count my time because this was a fun hobby.

So after approximately a year of CRH, I found 100 40% halves. 14.75 ounces of silver. Total value $255.62. Minus $50 face. Total profit: $205.62 if I could sell them for melt.

However, it's much more like I could get only $1.75-$2 each. So best case scenario I sell them $200. Minus the $50 face. I have profited $150.

Was it worth it? It was fun, sure. But a year's worth of searching yielded $150?

Hmmm, that's not sounding too great. And from reading other posts, it seems that finding 100 40% halves in a year was actually pretty good results.

I'll PM you my address :)

Hold them until [hopefully] silver goes up, unless you really need the money.

There is no rush, and any luck, next recession silver will go up again

I have also found 7 90%ers in this time.

That's a ratio of 100-7. For the rest of you who coin roll hunt halves, how many 90%s to you find compared to 40%s?

If you enjoy CRHing as a hobby, then finding 40% halves is a plus. I can think of many hobbies that people spend great sums of money enjoying. Consider yourself fortunate.

About 50% of the halves I get from my bank are silver, and the vast majority are 40%. I've only gotten a few that are 90%s.

I don't search through boxes though, I have the tellers hold customer deposited halves for me and I buy them at face.

In 3 years of CRH, I have found 428 x 90%ers compared to 1928 x 40%ers. I wish my numbers were that strong this year but they are way low so far.

You only paid face value for them, so, if you don't need the $200, why not hold onto them. You never know! Silver might go back up to $50 sometime. ~ Chris

If you do this to get rich, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
