I went on a coin raid today in the 'hood and got 4 coins for less than 100's including a BU 1890 -O Morgan and two of the prettiest Peace Dollars I've been able to get my hands on. Check these out:
And the Peace Dollars - these are nice and cost $22 each... Notice the hair Better images will be on http://www.mrbrklyn.com/coins/
Now I have one question. The 1890 O was in BU and packed in a paper slieve with a plastic mylar cut out. The cutout was very tight and ripped a little near the top of the coin where you see the back smut. Should I remove the smut with a little soap and water? Ruben
Ruben, soap and water will take off all the toning and leave the coin looking dull and lifeless. Use 100% pure acetone instead. It will take off any organic stuff and leave the original toning. If the black stuff is toning, leave it be, some of us like it
Acetone? Where do you get pure acetone outside of Fischer Scientific? Will that destroy the coin at all? Ruben
I call anything...Acetone and soap and water cleaning....and to me that doesn't look like PVC so why take it off. I can't tell if it has wear or if that is the light striking from the O mint...if its UNC then I would say MS62/3. Speedy
I think it would go 64. And I wouldn't touch it - leave it just as it is. I know there are lots of folks who swear that acetone is harmless to silver coins - I am not one who agrees with this. The only time I would recommend the use of acetone would be for the removal of PVC contamination.
What makes you look at the 1890 - O coin and say it is MS-64? as opposed to the other Morgan which when I purchased it was graded as a AU-58 Ruben
I know you asked GDJMPS but here is why I gave that a MS grade... Its a O mint mark....the O mint coins are known for a week strike so therefore it is still MS even though so of the detail is gone. The other Morgan you show is a P mint coin....and it shows wear so it wouldn't get the MS grade. GD can say it better than I can...so wait to hear that... Speedy
Great looking coins you got there I do like the bottom Peace Dollar, is that the actual toning in the pic or is that your scanner? De Orc :thumb:
Not really toning. Both are just brilent, the cleanest and most blilent I've ever seen of Peace Dollars in this price range. They have some scratches, but otherwise, they look like they were minted yesterday. The funny thing about that Eagle on the Peace Dollar is that it reminds me of the Great American Pigeon. Ruben
LOL sorry Ruben shoudnt laugh but that just struck me as very funny, reason I asked was in the pic it has a nice purple colouring to it De Orc :eating:
That purple is the deep metal color caught in a momemt in time. Those coins have such metalic shine that they are almost steel like. ruben
I told the deal who I brought it from today that you said that and he laughed. I should have it slabbed. I don't have time to do it right now, but maybe soon. Ruben
MrBkrlyn...gotta ask...where did you find a coin dealer in NYC that can be trusted. I'm a newbie to this town and if coin dealers are anything like the electronics pedlers (wet newpaper filled laptops, etc.) its got to be tough. Any recommended stores (if you don't mind sharing ) Cross streets address would have me much in your debt PS. Sweet finds
There is nothing there to laugh at...I wouldn't go to that dealer again...what GDJMSP said is right. I see no reason to have the coin slabbed...the slabbing would cost more than the coin is worth IMO. I think lawdogct said the key.....where did you find a NYC dealer that can be TRUSTED....don't trust your dealer much...when it comes to grading...value...and the like....keep that to yourself. Speedy
By "other Morgan" I assume you mean the other Morgan you posted a pic of in this thread. You asked specific questions about the grade of the '90-O and what to do about the toning - so I answered with my opinion. But you didn't ask anything about the "other Morgan" - so I didn't voice my opinion on it. Now then - is my opinion about the grade of the '90-O correct ? Maybe, maybe not. Lord knows I've been wrong before and undoubtably will be again. But I'll tell ya what I'll do - if you do decide to send it in for grading and it turns out I was wrong - I'll pay the grading fees for ya. But if I was right - you take it back to that dealer - then you can laugh
I think I posted the other Morgan once before and the thinking was that it was an AU 58, which is what it was sold to me as. The 1890 wa just sold as BU, for $45. YOur saying it is likely a MS-64. The dealer who sold it to me thorught it was less, so if he is erroring, it is on the side of giving me a bargain. As to where to find a good dealer you can trust... Well, I don't trust ANY of these guys in person or on line. However, Bay Coins on Avenue U and 14th in Brooklyn seems the most decent in grading so far. He's moving down the block soon. Ruben
