Hello everyone, I received an email asking for my opinion on adding a 3rd ANA convention to the schedule. I sent and email to Dave Harper, editor of Numismatic News and received an email back, quite fast as well. I was wondering your thoughts on this matter. Would 3 be two many, are more needed? Let me know, and I will forward it to him. I am for it as I feel there are not enough big shows currently, but what do you think? Regards, Stan
I was in Fort Worth for the Spring ANA show and I heard that they already voted and approved another 3rd/ Fall show… I thought they mentioned the cities of Pittsburg and Denver. Anyone else hear anything?
I rec'd another email back from Dave Harper stating they are planned for Sacramento, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Regards, Stan
Good to know. I am having dinner with two of the ANA board members on Wed. I will also see what they say.
I asked im if it would be OK to place his email on here, and he said "sure, go ahead". So here it is, send him a message with your comments and concerns. David.Harper@fwmedia.com Regards, Stan
The only potential negative I see would be "oversaturation" - too many big shows - but I don't feel that's the case at all. Heritage has a major auction 12 months a year. Why not three ANAs ? I think three per year would be great. I feel they should be geographically balanced - East, Central and West. The chosen cities should be places where there is good market for coins. The Fort Worth show was successful, and midwestern shows tend to do well. The bottom line is this - if buyers show up, the dealers will certainly represent. The other big advantage of ANA shows over other big shows - education and presentations. There is more opportunity for formal learning at ANA shows, and that's HUGE.
I did state this in an email to Dave Harper, though as I stated as well I also do not feel there are enough big shows. I too would hate to see the shows draw less dealers/buyers due to to many shows. I am assuming as i staid to him, that this has been considered. Regards, Stan
If 1 city (Baltimore) can handle 2-3 large shows a year I'm sure adding a 3rd ANA show spread throughout the country is not that big of a deal. I think it would be great and give more cities and regions the opportunity to host an event.
I agree. Also I think it will draw out more "rare" coins. Do you think more coin shows could have an effect on the coin market, either negative or positive? Just curious. i know one more will not, but if too many big shows start up... Regards, Stan
I just wish an ANA convention would be in Orlando some time. But, with FUN and Summer FUN, plus all the mid-size shows in the Orlando area I can't see it happening.
I hope it comes to Pittsburgh! It's hard for many to travel and it would be exciting to make it to a big show!!!
I agree with your thinking. another ANA show isn't going to hurt a thing. These are the primo shows and are run by smart people who do them correctly. Large shows are only as big as the public and the dealers make them. If the scheduling is bad... dealers can't make it from other shows. If it's not run properly nobody is happy... If the advertising is bad... people won't turn out. Long Beach is a good example of a show that IMO is on the way out. I have heard for a couple of years now that the shows are getting progressively worse from several different dealers who still do or no longer set up there. I personally would do a really big show every month if it was in decent driving distance.
2 thing - What does Harper have to do with this....he isn't on the ANA Board?? Next - where I live we never see a big show like that - Who not have one in the OH/IN/KY area. It seems like they are always in FL or CA. Speedy
Well it looks like Chicago is the new ANA Worlds Fair of Money site for a long time to come, and that Denver is getting the 2012 Money show and will be seeing some falls shows along with Pittsburg. See the ANA press release below. Chicago to Host ANA World's Fair of Money 2013-2015 Board Also Approves Fall Show and Spring 2012 LocationFORT WORTH, TEXAS -- The American Numismatic Association Board of Governors, on March 27, approved a recommendation from Executive Director Larry Shepherd to name Chicago as the site of the summer ANA World’s Fair of Money® in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and to launch a fall show in 2011. A third annual ANA convention will be scheduled between late September and mid-October, and will rotate among major cities like Pittsburgh, Boston and Denver. The ANA will continue to hold annual spring and summer shows. The Board named Denver as the site of the 2012 spring ANA National Money Show™, scheduled for May to avoid Colorado’s unpredictable early spring weather. “Successful conventions and auction contracts are critical to our future,” Shepherd said. “We can now move immediately to ‘brand’ Chicago as an ANA city.” Shepherd stressed the importance of branding Chicago as the home of the summer ANA World’s Fair of Money, noting the success FUN has had branding Orlando as its home, and Whitman establishing Baltimore as a destination for its shows. “By selecting a single good location, the ANA will brand its summer convention as an annual ‘coin show destination’ that all collectors and dealers will strive to attend. The dates will be tightly fixed, the location well known and easily accessible at a reasonable cost. But most importantly, it will give us an opportunity to expand our show and set it apart from all others.” Shepherd said the convention hall space available at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center (formerly the Rosemont Convention Center) in Chicago allows the ANA to increase bourse space, create more room for museum-quality exhibits, provide free space for clubs and professional organizations to meet, and provide more table options to attract new dealers and first-time buyer tables. By encouraging specialty numismatic organizations to gather for the World’s Fair of Money, those organizations could make the summer ANA the destination for all of their annual meetings, symposiums and educational programs. Specialty numismatic organizations would be encouraged to offer educational content to all ANA members, with the ANA coordinating its presentations with those of specialty organizations, thus making it possible to further expand educational offerings. In addition, the time slot between the “Official Pre-Show” and the World’s Fair of Money could be used to add educational classes and tie-ins to Summer Seminar. In a report to the Board of Governors, Shepherd cited several reasons why Chicago is an ideal site for the World’s Fair of Money: It is home to a large and dedicated collector base; It is consistently one of the top two choices among members as a show site; It is centrally located and has the single best airport in the country in terms of flights in and flights out; It is a prime vacation and recreation destination; It is the most convenient location for all ANA members nationwide; Previous ANA shows in Chicago have been extremely successful; No other major coin organization has branded Chicago as its location for a major show. In addition, having one venue for the summer show allows the ANA to make more efficient use of its convention preparation efforts, to negotiate multi-year convention and hotel contracts, work with familiar vendors and save significantly on signage and decorating costs. Shepherd said the Chicago location would be evaluated after each year to ensure it would be the right choice for a longer term commitment. “The most important benefit is that we can change the dynamics of the ANA World’s Fair of Money so that it sets this show apart from every other coin show and establishes this show as the numismatic event of the year, that all must attend,” Shepherd said. A spring and fall show rotation in major U.S. cities allows the ANA to provide large, high-quality events in geographically diverse areas. Shepherd said once a spring show rotation is determined, the majority of hobbyists and ANA members will have convenient access to ANA shows, wherever they live. “A third show in the fall allows us to extend our educational outreach and take our conventions to more parts of the country, where we can be accessible to a greater number of ANA members and hobbyists,” he said.
Actually closer to 10. It just seems like 12 sometimes. We'll see what happens. I'm personally more than a bit leery of having the big show in one place for a long period of time, but I also agree with you that an East/Central/West balance would be good over the long term, from the standpoint that the ANA would have that much more of a chance to reach its entire membership.
I'm with you 100%. For several reasons, I'm opposed to any city hosting the ANA every year. For instance... in the Central zone, the ANA should be in any city between Houston and Minneapolis. Spread the wealth ! Keeping the show moving 'twixt cities draws in new collectors. The ANA show is a uniquely effective way of encouraging new collectors. The Scout Merit Badge thing is a classic example, the Trivia Tour another. For more experienced collectors, the ANA classes are tremendously beneficial. All these things build the hobby's base. Everybody wins.
I went to the one in DC several years back. Not impressed. I'll stick to the Whitman shows. The ANA show had everything BUT was way overpriced. Dealers had to try to pay for the table fees, but in doing so priced themselves out of my market.
