Hey I am buying a loupe (for better pics) and want to know which x I should get as well as the cheapest place to get them, also is there a big difference between 30x and 40x, if someone has both could you please post the difference, THANKS! -Goldstone
This is one of the ones I had been looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/40X-Magnifying-...DomainQ5f0QQsalenotsupported#ebayphotohosting Is it good quality?
I use a 16x... 10x should be just fine, anything less might not work real well.. It is hard to get good photos though, using a small magnifier, I'd go ahead and get one, but don't be disappointed if your pictures are not perfect Might I suggest playing with your camera? (Took me 3 years to use mine right)
To me it depends on the coin you are going to be looking at. You try looking at a large cent under something like 30x-40x it makes everything look horrible. I will not even use my 16x on those - I stick to my 10x at most. Now if I want to really see a blowup of a section of the coin I use my Digital blue scope. It makes it easy to pop a coin under and slide it around to see things like the attached extra cactus die chip at 60x.
Depending on the coin, I actually have 6 different loupes. You can pick a set up at mostly any hardware store out there like I did for just $2. It came with a 2X,3X,5X,7X and 10X. Then I went on eBay for a 30X, but you won't really need it.
To look at a whole coin under magnification i prefer to use my 4x glass. If its detail I'm looking for, most i'll use is a 10x.. I guess i just have those 'young' eyes still Thats with my 10x loupe with no zoom on the camera.
I got a Belomo Triplet 10x and it's more than adequate. It came with a neat lanyard. You'd be surprised what 10x can do. BTW, I'm sure I could find several different magnification strengths if I thought I needed them. The 10x is all I've felt I needed to this point. NGC and PCGS primarily grade by eye and may, in some instances choose to use a *max* 5x loupe to check something out on a coin before assigning a grade. So in other words, a microscopic scratch seen with a 30-40x loupe will not drop a coin a grade one way or the other.
