I have 3 1928 $1 red stamp bills. I need to know what I can sell these for. I collect national currency. Any help would be appreciated.
The story on the $1's is that they were only circulated in Puerto Rico beginning ca. 1948 - often times with the Legal Tender notes they were stored for a long time before being circulated. Some like the 1966 and 1966A $100s were only released in small numbers and the rest destroyed after the law authorising them was repealed much longer after they were printed. So with the 1928 notes they were stored for some 20+ years, then circulated only in Puerto Rico which is why there are not many of them saved especially in good condition.
The margins are better on the top two. Assuming they are UNC notes, you are looking at looking at about $450.00 or so for the top two and $400.00 for the bottom one. Despite the fact that these only circulated in Puerto Rico for a short period of time, complete packs of 100 UNC notes were saved so consecutive numbers are not unknown.
In their raw state, the notes fetch around $300 to $350 in uncirculated grade. To get anything higher you need exceptional centering and high resolution photos to demonstrate a potential gem. But it's always a gamble to buy raw notes online, and buyers take this into account and bid accordingly. I saw 3 consecutive $1's graded by TPGs in 64-64-63 sell recently for $1,200. You could probably squeeze out $1,000 to $1,100 without much difficulty.
