Here is an ANACS AU-50 $3 gold coin. I am considering one of these eventually, so I may be asking for input as it would be a very big purchase. I'll probably go for a common date in the range of $1,000 - $1,500. I really like the look of this one personally, and the price is reasonable.

    thanks,
    John

For that kind of money, hold out for one with some luster.

That one is totally flat and lusterless. Coins lose luster due to wear, but many AU coins have very nice luster. I think this one has been overdipped.

Hit the coin shows and auctions. Look at hundreds of 'em. That's a good education before sinking the $$$ into a fat boy like this.

I personally find it difficult to photograph a coin that properly reflects its luster, especially when its in a slab. I agree that the coin looks flat in the photo, but it may possess ample luster in hand. Either way, a coin of this magnitude I would need to examine in hand before I sealed the deal.

Also, with a price range of 1K -1.5K, I'm kind of picking at the bottom of the barrel with this series. High end AU-BU coins that are certified are usually 2K and above. However, I agree that luster is important and would like to have one that has some degree of remaining luster.

Also, this coin is in a problem-free ANACS slab; so if it were cleaned/dipped, it wasn't enough for ANACS to notate it. There also appears to be a fair amount of toning, which I am attracted to. I also liked this coin because it seems to be free of the scuffs and hairlines that usually accompany the certified $3 gold coins I've looked at.

Anyways, thanks all for the feedback and Merry Christmas!!!

Based strictly on your images, I would pass on the coin.
    It just looks ... wrong.
Maybe in real life it is much better.
With an AU coin I would expect a reasonable amount of hourglass luster.

I'm afraid I have to agree - pass on that coin. It is flat, washed out - totally dead. It has been dipped to death. I doubt it would even slab at NGC or PCGS, and if it did would probably be XF40 at best.

ANACS is not the company they used to be.
